How To Care For Wood Blinds

Not only will real wood blinds give your home privacy and block the sun, they will also give any room a warm, rustic appeal. Wood blinds come in a wide array of styles and colors, from light to dark, so you can easily find window coverings to coordinate with your home decor.

If you prefer a rich look, choose blinds made from darker shades of wood, such as pecan, cherry, walnut, chestnut or mahogany. Lighter woods include oak and birch. For a tropical, beach house vibe, go with bamboo blinds, which are also eco-friendly since they are made from sustainable wood.

After you've hung your wood blinds, protect your investment by maintaining and cleaning them on a regular basis. Not only will the window coverings look their best, they'll last longer and perform better as well.

Here are some tips for caring for your real wood blinds:

Daily or Weekly Basis

Depending on how busy your home is, you may need to wipe your blinds down every day. If you have kids or pets, a quick wipe-down will remove any sticky fingerprints or drool before they can stain the material.

You can use a dry microfiber cloth or feather duster to pick up any dry debris, such as dust or dander. Simply wipe the cloth or duster across each blind individually, working from one end to the other. Make sure you clean both sides of the blinds.

To remove wet or stuck-on debris, such as food, spray a cleaner recommended for use on real wood onto each blind and wipe it dry with a clean, soft cloth. Make sure the blinds are  completely dry, as moisture can damage them.

Monthly Basis

At least once a month, use your vacuum's hose or brush attachment to get rid of any hard-to-remove debris, such as pet fur. Run the attachment from one end of the blind to the other, cleaning both sides. Consider taking the blinds off of the window to clean them more thoroughly.

To clean the blinds and give them a lustrous, attractive sheen, you can treat them with oil soap while they are off of the windows. You can either use a commercial product or make your own by combing a few drops of a gentle dish-washing soap,  a small amount of olive oil and warm water in a bowl.

Dip a cloth into the mixture, wring it out and wipe it over the blinds, working in one direction from end-to-end. Dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. Visit a site like http://www.houseofdraperyutah.com for more help.
